The Black Keys feat. Mos Def & Jim Jones - Hoochie Coo

Dame Dash set up a new indie label for the rock band The Black Keys to release a rap/rock album entitled Blak Roc featuring other hip hop heavyweights Q-such as Tip, Ludacris, Raekwon, RZA, Billy Danze, Pharoahe Monch & ODB. The album drops on Black Friday. Here’s the first single:

According to Mr. Dash:

“My assistants, who are now actually A&Rs, were going to a Black Keys concert for their birthday and I wasn’t invited,” he explained. “Usually on their birthdays we all do it together and the reason why I wasn’t invited was because the concert was sold out . And I had never heard of The Black Keys and I was like y’all still gonna go without me. And they was like ‘Yo it’s The Black Keys.” So I was like, lemme hear this group. So I start listening to them and they actually became my favorite group. They were on heavy rotation so we just reached out and we kicked it with them and I was like, ‘I wonder what would happen if we got Jim Jones and the Keys in the studio’ and Jim came in and all of a sudden Mos came in and then [it] just built from there. “

DOOM - Unexpected Guests Artwork & Tracklist

Everybody’s favorite masked MC is preparing to drop a rarities compilation next month on Gold Dust. Hit the jump for a press release and tentative tracklist.

DOOM is one of the most original and uncompromising voices in hip-hop. From his work in the 90’s with the seminal KMD to his legendary releases under a variety of aliases including MF Doom, Madvillain, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Dangerdoom & more, his prolific body of work has always valued artistic integrity and creativity over anything else. As numerous and varied as his albums are, DOOM also has a thick catalog of guest appearances, remixes, non-album tracks, & vinyl only singles. For the first time, Unexpected Guest presents many of these hard to find tracks as a mix CD, executed and overseen by the Super Villain himself.

With a list of co-conspirators which includes marquee level names such as Talib Kweli, Ghostface & GZA as well as underground heroes Vast Aire, CountBass D & Kurius, the music on this disc highlights DOOM’s ever-present trademark wit and taste for raw and ominous beats. On “Trap Door,” he spits couplets like “No curse words / DOOM the worst church nerd verse heard” over a plucked bass and guitar line from producer Jake One that sounds like the funkiest spy movie soundtrack imaginable. “Sniper Elite” sees the emcee united with the late J Dilla, and is one of the many tracks featured that has yet to see an official CD release. The album will also feature a never before heard live version of DOOM’s classic “I Hear Voices” from the Operation Doomsday album.

Peppered with his signature comic book dialogue and vintage sound clips, Unexpected Guests presents a treasure trove of DOOM obscurities which should shed light on material that even some hardcore fans may have missed. It’s a frenetic, virtuosic look at a true hip-hop original.

1. Get ‘Er Done feat. DOOM - Jake One
2. Fly That Knot feat. DOOM - Talib Kweli
3. Sniper Elite feat. DOOM - Dilla Ghostface DOOM
4. Trap Door feat. DOOM - Jake One
5. Sorcerers feat. DOOM & Invizible Handz - John Robinson
6. Da Supafriendz - Vast Aire
7. Quite Buttery - Count Bass D feat DOOM
8. ? - DOOM featuring Kurious
9. All Outta Ale - DOOM
10. E.N.Y. House - Masta Killa
11. Bells of DOOM - DOOM
12. My Favorite Ladies - DOOM
13. Street Corners (Remix) - Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck & GZA

DOOM’s Unexpected Guests drops on October 27th.

Ghostface Squashes Beef With 50 Cent, Says He’s Open to Record a Collabo

The feud between Ghostface Killah and 50 Cent is officially over. In a recent interview with XXLMag.com, the Wu-Tang vet said that his beef with Fif is a thing of the past.

As fans know, the two New York rappers had a public war of words years back, after 50 included the Shaolin heavyweight on 1999’s “How to Rob.” Ghost notoriously then fired back on a skit from his critically acclaimed Supreme Clientele album, as the deep-throated Clyde Smith. “Yo that nigga 50 Cent, I don’t even know why he did that lil bum ass shit right there,” he said. “But I’ma tell you something. You can say all them other niggas names but niggas gonna see you based on that big daddy…If I see you up in here I’ma have about 500 wolves on you…like I said 50 you a bird and niggas gonna see you.”

After seeing an interview with Starks on Fif’s web site, thisis50.com, XXL asked Tony what caused the change of heart. “That’s some old-school shit,” he shared. “Back then, things were all snowballed in the air on some other shit. I didn’t like what he said, that’s where it all started from anyway. But we kicked it on the phone one time, and after we kicked it on the phone that was it.”

“I aint really trying to hold no grudge fucking 30 years later after he done said whatever the fuck he done said,” Starks continued. “So it was like whatever.”

Ghost says he would even be open for recording a song with Fif.

“It’s whatever God wills,” he said. “At the end of the day we’re still people just trying to get ahead. It’s like you’re having a fight with a muthafucka 10 years ago… you can either keep the grudge or be like ‘yo wattup’ and just let it go and shit, it’s like what the fuck I’m holding on to it for. I respect all these niggas. As long as you respect me, I’ma respect you.”

Wizard of Poetry, Starks’ R&B-tinged eighth solo LP, is set to hit stores on September 29.

Drake – Forever (Feat. Lil Wayne, Eminem & Kanye West)

The internet(s) have been talking about this collaboration for the past couple days, but truthfully.. these are the type of tracks that are historic in the world of hip-hop. If you remember, Lil Wayne wanted to work with Eminem during the time he was recording for Relapse, but it never worked out. Eminem vowed to give Weezy F. a shot after the fact, & now its a reality. Although we’ve heard collab with Drizzy and ‘Big Brother’ already, the Kanye/Drake link would inevitable. This track will be found on Lebron James’ More Than A Game project dropping soon. It might be bigger than “Swagger Like Us“.. Let the debate begin, who got the best verse?? Look Ma, NO TAGS.

A-Alikes feat. Mos Def - Sirens In The Distance

This track is off the latest A-Alikes mixtape, “The Hustler and the Hunted 3.” The mixtape has been composed so vivid that it plays as a true-life movie in the making. They touch on topics that address everything from self-preservation to US economics. Controversy still surrounds the NY based rap group, A-Alikes, ever since they openly admitted to the FCC about infiltrating several radio stations across the US just last month with a special uncensored message. DJ Victorious seamlessly incorporated excerpt of these recordings into the project. Raye 6, I.G. and Afayah, Checkmate, Tahir, DJ Butta, and even Kanye West offered their talent to this latest release. This Mos Def feature will officially be on their upcoming album “Us Against Them” dropping later this year.

Beanie Sigel Arrested for Drug Possession

Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel was arrested and charged with marijuana possession in New Jersey, early Sunday morning (August 16) reports the Burlington County Times.

According to the paper, Beans was on his way to perform at a private event at local tavern, Kelly’s Bar, at 12:44 a.m. on Sunday when he was stopped by authorites for possession of under 50 grams. Two other men, Karl S. ,Dargan and Justin S. Gaines, were also charged. None of the three men are believed to be in jail as of press time.

Sigel has a long history of arrests including weapons possession and parole violation charges. Back in 2005 he was acquitted of murder charges for a shooting that occurred in West Philadelphia.

As XXLMag.com previously reported Beans has a new CD coming out on September 1. The disc, titled The Broad Street Bully, will be released independently on Siccness Records and is described by label head Nemo Mitchell as more of a “mixtape” than a full-fledged studio album.

Eminem Car Crash a “Twitter Rumor” Says Manager

Earlier today (August 17) and yesterday popular social network site Twitter was abuzz with claims that rap superstar Eminem had died in a car crash.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Eminem is in fact alive and well and the reports were just “Twitter rumors” in the words of Shady’s longtime manager Paul Rosenberg. Yet it seems as if the first web posting about the Detroit lyricist’s alleged accident appeared on Yahoo News. In the story, which has since been removed, Em was on his cell phone before succumbing to “a terrible car crash.” The false article included quotes from a doctor named “Dr. Adams.”

Em isn’t the only hip-hop artist to have rumors spread about his death on the net. Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Nate Dogg have all been victims of similar false reports.

I was so pissed when I heard this...I wouldn't believe it....I did the research knew it was false...I wanted to knock out the nukka who wrote the article

50 Cent Planning Free Concert in Queens, Cops in Fear

Jamiaca, Queens-native 50 Cent is secretly planning to put on a free show near his hometown, but authorities and residents fear it will bring violence and gunplay to the neighborhood.

The New York Post reports that the concert will take place near the Queens projects where Fif almost lost his life before signing to Shady/Aftermath. “We can’t control the area,” one law-enforcement source told the paper.

“Someone’s gonna try to make a name for themselves,” another source said. “They’re gonna take a shot at him, and they’re either gonna hit him or they’re gonna miss him and hit some poor, innocent kid or grandmother.”

A slew of police officers will shut down the 20 block radius of the South Jamaica Houses for the performace, which is set to draw in close to 10,000 fans.

The show is scheduled for August 30 at 5:30 p.m. at public elementary school P.S. 40. It will be a part of the neighborhood’s Family Day celebration

To celebrate “Inside A Change” winning the Best Film Award at the 2009 HBO NYILFF, Skillz, Usef Dinero and DJ Jazzy Jeff put this joint together for the soundtrack. The original concept for the video was to create literal interpretations of Skillz’ lyrics that have to do with the characters in the film. However, that sort of morphed into straight up performance shots where we followed Skillz around various locations during his tour and intercutting it with abstract b roll shots. It was a blast shooting this video and big huge shoutout to Skillz for supporting this film since day one. Enjoy!

47th Best Hip-Hop Albums Of All Time: The Clipse - Lord Willin

Why??? Man this is one of the hardest & ILL-est albums ever...It should be higher but it take the 47th spot on my list. It has a good mix a gangsta, commercial, intricate word playing & chick joints...This album should of went triple real rap...

Best Song: Grindin' (Of Course)

Best Bar(s): Malice - I'm Not You

Yes it pains me to see them need this/All of them lost souls and I'm their Jesus

Best Verse: Malice - Intro

I even went by the book at first
Until I realized 9 to 5 wouldn't quench my thirst, so I
Start my mission, leave my residence
Mama knew that I child like me had better sense
But something had to give, that's real I had to live
I chefed that soft white and pumped from her crib
Scouts honor started with my grandmama
Who distributed yay she had flown in from the Bahamas
Partner, please, I grinds, I hustle with ease
Can damn near eyeball any weight in my sleep
I don't entertain hate surrounding the street
If I was you, I'd be trynna get down with me
But no, see these niggas know too much
Meanwhile I rock jewels that look like my diamonds blush
Cats act as if rap fell in my lap
I've suffered heartbreak many times back to back
And still feel belittled sittin' here spittin' riddles
Amongst clown ass rappers who tend to give me the giggles
Let 'em take it however they wanna take it
I'm the reason your favorite MC's no longer your favorite
Hey, I one of the greats, I can't lie
I mean great to the point I'm concerned I might die
Make no mistake, Malice is who you tune to
It's all in the name, trust, I will wound you

Side Note: Even though Malice got the best verse & bar on the album I think Pusha is still better

Pharoahe Monch Reflects On Music Biz

In an interview with Urb.com today, Pharoahe Monch shared his thoughts on a number of issues including the reception of his music, and where the future of Hip Hop may be going. Considered a lyrical master by most, he has worked with other artists such as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and many others. Though not always in the spotlight of commercial Hip Hop, Pharoahe is still active, performing at Rock The Bells last year and participating in music festivals and other venues. He told the Web site that no matter the event, he still gives audiences a show and referenced a famous baseball player to make his point.

"I know it's cliche to use sports analogies," he preambled, "[but] I remember Joe Dimaggio said that he goes hard everyday because there’s some kid in the stadium that’s there for the first time who’s father was like, 'We’re going to see Joe Dimaggio, the great Joe Dimaggio,' and if he’s fucking being an asshole and goofing off in the field, this kid is gonna be like, 'This is fucking Joe Dimaggio? Are you serious?' And so, especially when you’re in my position and you’re still building- and I definitely haven’t reached out to everyone that could possibly be a fan. I think there’s so many people who if they heard 'Desire' or 'Internal Affairs' would still enjoy the music. I can’t really afford to half-ass."

With almost ten years in the industry, Pharoahe admits that his music has changed a bit.

"I think the music is kinda reflected by emotion and dispositions and life. At the moment, when I was going into 'Internal Affairs,' I was loving dark beast and dark hip-hop, and dark music. I hadn’t done a lot of collaborations with people so that was real important to me, to work with a lot of people and express things in a really dark, hardcore manner...Desire was more of a bright, spiritual, uplifting record in my opinion."

With much buzz going around about the latest newcomers in rap, Pharoahe chimed in on who he thought was the most promising new artist.

"I like this kid Blu There’s a difference between when someone is heralded and placed in a position to be the next and then there’s a difference when someone just has 'it.' I don’t know what he looks like, I’ve never seen him perform, I just heard the song and I’m like 'kid’s special'. I’m excited about his career in the sense of a fan, like I wanna purchase the music like back in the days 'n shit and pick it up and support him. I'm looking forward to purchasing this shit, like a young fucking kid again. There’s a lot of new dope artists."

Timbaland Preps Video Game for Aspiring Producers

While it may seem as if super producer Timbaland has been missing on the hip-hop front as of late, the Virginia-native is making a comeback…digitally, that is.

The hitmaker, known for crafting chart-songs for Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Ludacris, has partnered with the masterminds behind the highly-successful Grand Theft Auto series to develop a video game, titled Beaterator. The game will allow players to utilize Timbo’s signature sounds to create their own beats.

“I’ve worked closely with Rockstar Games to make something completely unique,” Tim said via a press release. “Beaterator is like taking my music studio and turning it into a suite of tools anyone can use. We can’t wait to hear the beats people make and share with the world.”

“Beaterator is a very natural progression for us,” Sam Houser, the founder of Rockstar Games, added. “Music is incredibly important to us here at Rockstar, and we believe that there are many people out there who share that passion and will be excited about creating music of their own.”

Beaterator will be released on September 29

Drake Signing Sparks Skirmish At Universal

There's a glitch in the Universal matrix and it involves Drake.

Earlier this summer, Billboard.com reported that while sources predicted the Toronto-raised rapper was likely to sign with Universal Motown, 22-year-old Drake inked a deal directly with Aspire, a company co-run by his manager, Cortez Bryant, with distribution through another Universal label -- Universal Republic -- through Young Money/Cash Money.
But now it seems there has been a shift of sorts, as reps at Motown are requesting all Drake Billboard chart entries be credited to Motown and not Republic moving forward -- a change that will be reflected in this week's charts.

"I went through Universal Republic because I don't fuck with Motown, at all," Drake says in the latest issue of Fader magazine, further confirming his signing to Republic. He further expresses his dislike for Motown, specifically president Sylvia Rhone, on a track titled "Say What's Real" off his "So Far Gone" mixtape, rapping "I've always been something that these labels can't buy / especially if they trying to take a piece of my soul / and Sylvia be telling 'Tez, 'Damn, Drake fly' / and he just be like, 'silly motherfucker, I know."

A source close to Drake says the rapper is signed to Republic, but that Motown will distribute the album, alleging that Motown -- specifically Rhone -- wants to take "credit for anything involving Drake."
But a source at Universal says it seems as if Drake's deal with Republic was never finalized before Drake and his camp started confirming it to the media, and that the move to Motown was made last minute. Although the source claims to not know what prompted the move, he/she did suggest the reason for it may be that because of contractual reasons, Motown may get first dibs on any artist signed to Young Money and Cash Money regardless of the artist's preference.

The same source says Drake's dislike of Rhone stems from an encounter between the two about three years ago. Apparently, before linking with mentor and Young Money labelhead Lil Wayne, Drake had taken a trip to Motown's New York headquarters to audition for Rhone in hopes of getting signed, but Rhone opted to pass on him at the time.

Regardless of all the confusion regarding his label, Drake's popularity continues to surge. Last week he debuted with "I'm Going In" at No 93 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and this week he enters at No. 100 with "November 18th," off his famed mixtape, "So Far Gone." "Best I Ever Had," also off the mixtape, is currently at No. 2 on the same chart, while the Young Money collective "Every Girl" sits at No. 5 this week.

Drake's debut album, "Thank Me Later," is slated to be released later this year.

Its big pun! the one and only son of tony...montana
You aint promised manana in the rotten manzana
Cmon pana we be mob rhymers
Feel the marijuana, snake bite, anaconda
A man of honor would wanna match my persona
Sometimes rhymin I blow my own mind like nirvana
Comma, and go the whole nine like madonna
Go try to find another rhymer with my kinda gramma

49th Best Hip-Hop Albums Of All Time: Little Brother - The Minstrel Show

WHY??? The 1st time I heard of little brother I thought they where from either Philly, New York or DC but these little brothers from North Cakalakey rep the south hard w/ an east coast flow & i can respect that. The wordplay & production (cant forget the humor) really is what makes this album great

Best Song: "Lovin It" of course this a such a soulful feel good track...(9th is the most impressive person on this track..."Dont Understand

Best Bar: "And I ain't worried about niggas bitin' Minstrel Show /They still teethin' off 'The Listening'" Hiding Place (Phonte)

Best Verse: Good Morning (Phonte)

Each day's another chance to do the things I could've
Done the day before, but I didn't and I known I should've
So I say a prayer for the gone for gooders
Who left this world, then kiss my girl "good mornin', shuga"
Another sunrise, and as much as I would love
To roll over on you I cannot do it because
The good Lord I prayed to him
And he said, "Niggaz is listening now"
So I better have something to say to 'em
So I'mma tell 'em how it went down, man
Doin' shows for free goin' outta town, man
The way I almost broke down and, got a 9 to 5
Cause I had more press than the soundscans
This is the price that I pay for this music
And every word that I write is a testament to it
And if I had to go back, I wouldn't change a thing
Wouldn't re-cut it, re-edit, or change a frame
'Cause it would not be fair, to turn my back on the struggle
When that exact same hustle got me here
Told niggaz for the getup, we three the hard way
And Broadway's the only place you'll ever throw a set up
Speechless is all you'd be if we ever met up
I survived far to much now to ever let up, motherfucker
