Eminem’s Video For “3 A.M.” To Debut On Cinemax

With Eminem’s Relapse gaining much anticipation for its May 19 release, the Detroit rapper is giving each aspect of the new album proper exposure.

On Saturday, May 2, his music video for “3 A.M.” will premiere exclusively on Cinemax at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Because Cinemax is a premium television network, the video for “3 A.M.” will be aired completely uncensored. The music video is directed by Syndrome, who specialize in live-action directing and have done previous work with artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Swizz Beatz, and Talib Kweli.

The debut of Em’s video will precede the television premiere of “The Strangers,” and will play throughout the month of May. Thus far, Eminem has released a street single with “Crack a Bottle” featuring 50 Cent and Dr. Dre, as well as the track and music video for “We Made You” .

A trailer for “3 A.M.” is currently available in the HipHopDX Video section.

Drake Talks Newfound Success, Beef On Wax

Drake is making his name more recognized as days pass. He's been garnering attention, respect and accolades recently, and it seems that the future looks bright for the young, Young Money star, who is already rumored to be working with Just Blaze and Jay-Z.

In a recent interview with Joe Budden for JoeBuddenTV, Drake spoke up about disses and more.

After saying he was humbled by recent success, he added that he could not believe what he has achieved.

"I never thought it would come this far," he noted.

Later, he added that he would never diss other emcees.

"Diss me, you'll never get a reply," he noted, saying he would never disrespect another emcee on wax.

He went on to address rumors of a beef brewing with Kid Cudi.

"They keep trying to create a problem between me and Cudi. I love that guy, man...I listen to his music."

Drake's success has taken off so much that he recently sold out a May 2, 2009 Atlanta show in just five hours.

Raekwon Talks Aftermath Deal, Busta Rhymes’ Decision To Leave Label

In an interview with XXLMag.com, Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon spoke about his relationship with legendary West Coast producer Dr. Dre, and the near deal with his label, Aftermath Records.

While the partnership fell through, with Rae eventually signing to EMI to release his highly-anticipated follow up to 1995’s classic disc, Only Built For Cuban Linx, the Staten Island rapper said he is unsure if longtime associate Busta Rhymes’ decision to leave Aftermath was affected by his contract never materializing. Bussa Bus was originally slated to executive produce the project, although he no longer holds the position.

“Busta left after our situation was already not gonna happen,” he told XXL. “Busta might have felt like he was’ getting the proper energy he needed to get, so really one ain’t have nothing to do with two, but you never know at the end of the day, you know what I mean. I don’t know, I can’t call that.”

Despite never inking with Dre’s imprint, Rae managed to secure some heat from the Doc for OB4CL 2, along with a slew of other super producers including Pete Rock, J Dilla, Marley Marl, The Alchemist, Eric Sermon and Wu maestro The Rza.

OB4CL 2 is currently scheduled for August 11 release date. – Elan Mancini

Stay tuned for XXLMag.com’s full-length Raekwon feature coming soon.

Exclusive - Unreleased Big Pun Show feat Fat Joe & Cuban Link from 1998

This show was called The Temple "South Bronx Invades South Beach" created by DJ Khaled back in March 6th, 1998. I was one of the promoters for this event thats why how I manage to bring my video camera to the club at that time. This show had a great lineup featuring Big Pun, Fat Joe, Cuban Link, DJ Tony Touch & also DJ Craze the only solo DJ in history to claim the World DMC Champion trophy 3 times consecutively. This is the first 10 mins of the show and slowly will add some more.

Right here Fat Joe performed some classic joints like "Flow Joe", "I Shot Ya" and my favorite "Twins Deep Cover". Big Pun at that time had to take breaks and sit down before coming back to perform.

Clipse Glad Kanye Collabo Leaked

The Clipse love the fan reaction, but once again, they had a record come out before it was time. The brothers had planned a grand introduction of their new single, “Kinda Like a Big Deal,” with Kanye West. The artwork for the single was done by KAWS, and the duo were in the process of mastering the song before it hit the Net earlier this week.

“We heard it leaked — God!” Pusha T said standing on Collins Avenue with his brother, Malice. “Just when we had everything in order,” Push said of the timeline to release the record, “it just happens. We’re happy Kanye got on the record. The response has been crazy. Rave reviews about it. Thanks for everybody lending an ear.”

“Kanye was in Japan somewhere [when he laid his verse]. He called and was like, ‘I’ll have your verse done in two hours.’ Two or three hours, it was done,” Push said of the collabo.

“It was just how we was feeling at the time, as far as the Clipse and a Kanye collaboration with the artwork, KAWS,” the younger Clipse member explained of the blissful, boastful content. “The name of the song is ‘Kinda Like A Big Deal’ — everything around that had to be big. It’s just how we was feeling. This third album is kinda like a big deal, the collaboration, all of that, is like a big deal.”

“Being back with Pharrell is like a big deal,” Malice interjected. The Clipse’s Till the Casket Drops is tentatively set to come out in September. And the two promise big radio records to go with their M.O. of those gritty street jams.

Top 10 Articles on DIY Hip Hop

Let’s start with this: How Do I Break Into The Global Hip Hop Market? Sure, we’re just diving right the fuck in, but that’s the goal, right? You want to be internationally known, respected and paid. Let’s not dick around here. (On that note, keep an eye on Global Hip Hop Market, the best international rap blog in the known Universe.)

2. Working backwards, check out How do I get on Soundscan and Billboard Charts? This tackles the technical tasks you’ve gotta deal with in order to get registered with the evil empire at Nielsen and start getting your numbers like a real rock star should. Spoiler Alert: It costs $500 a year so you better be planning on selling some records.

3. It could use some detail work, but The $0 Promotional Plan is still a solid map. As far as how to be worth promoting, well…that’s a slippery slope. Here’s the best summary piece: Be Innovative, Episodic and Interesting and Get Free Publicity. (That really is the formula, by the way…it’s just harder than it sounds.)

4. On the same media promo angle, up next we’ve got How Do I Get My Music Reviewed? For further advice, check out Adam B’s recent warnings for DIY rap stars, I Will Not Listen to Your MP3s and the follow-up rant, The Gripe List.

5. The DIY Hip Hop Business Master Class is a lot like the Case Study articles I do on hip hop producers: all the best stuff in one place. This article is more like a remix of the best business and strategy lessons from ?uestlove, Slug, Wendy Day, and even Paul Wall. Really. (And for more quality interviews, check out the archives at Art of Rhyme and Philaflava.)

6. Does Radio Play Still Matter? Uh….yes. Yes, it does. No-brainer, but still a must-read.

7. SOME HARSH TRUTH: First, start with Three Reasons I Stopped Writing Audible Hype, which basically boils down to: “a) “New Business Models” Are For Rich People, and b) Marketing is Simple and Boring as Fuck.” There’s more, but that’s the gist. Also, the manifesto-rant that started Audible Hype: Music Business 2.0 Without the Bullshit.

8. So far on the list, we’ve been overlooking the most important part: live shows. Start with How Can I Get More Gigs? For more to chew on, check out this series on the question “Is Touring Still Necessary?” Basically: yes, but not until you’ve got enough of a fan base to be turning a profit on the road.

9. If you’re doing hip hop production, go sign up for the RSS feed over at Crate Kings right now. Every day, dope videos…educational, inspirational, always on point. Definitely the best hip hop production blog you’re gonna find.

10. Finally, in case you’ve been skimming this list because you want a record deal, READ THIS. Then start over and actually read all the articles I’ve linked to here. You don’t want a contract. You don’t need a deal. You do probably need a loan, though…if that’s the case, start here: Investing in Artists – The Human Part of the Capital Attraction Equation, by Bruce Warila.

XXcLusive: Redman Blames Universal For Disrupting “High,” Promises “New Weed Movie

With Blackout! 2 looming, Redman recently spoke to XXLMag.com about the less promising prospect of a sequel to his film collaboration with Method Man, 2001’s How High.

Since announcing the follow up two years ago, Red said the film is still at stage “zero.” The New Jersey-bred rapper blames Universal Pictures for the delay, stating him and his partner-in-rhyme may have to search for another distributor.

“To all the fans out there How High the movie is supposed to be coming out but Universal was not pushing, they weren’t pushing out the money so we might can’t call it How High Part 2, and we might can not use the characters,” he explained. “We can’t be Jamal, can’t be Silas, I’m gonna have to come up with a whole new weed movie because of Universal.” [Watch Below]

Yet the Funk Doc wants his fans to know that he’s doing his best to return to the big screen. “We are gonna give you a movie don’t worry about it,” he promised, “it’s just might not be How High Part 2.”

One sequel that has a firm release date is the Red and Meth’s new album. Blackout! 2, which picks up where duo’s platinum-selling debut left off, on May 19

Eminem Talks Relapse, Return To The Big Screen On Shade 45

Eminem is in full promotional mode. Earlier this morning (April 23) the Detroit superstar appeared on Angela Yee’s Lip Service show on his own Shade 45 Sirius Satellite Radio channel. During the interview Em hinted at his return to the silver screen, revealed more details on his upcoming comeback album and talked about his new single.

With Relapse, his first solo album in close to five years, hitting stores in the coming weeks, Shady told Yee that he is already preparing to drop another song from the project. Two weeks ago, MTV premiered the comical “We Made You” clip, which found Em following his familiar tactics, playing dress up and making fun of several pop culture mainstays like Lindsay Lohan, Amy Winehouse, Jessica Simpson and Kim Kardashian, but for his new single Em plans on going in a different direction.

The song, titled 3 A.M. “ is a lot darker than ‘We Made You,’” Em said. Adding, “ the whole album is different from the single.” The rapper said the video, which was shot in his hometown of Detroit, MI, is already done and will be dropping soon.

Asked if he tried any different approaches musically this go-around Em said with Dr. Dre producing most of the album, he was allowed to focus more on being creative with his vocal presence. “Dre made a lot of tracks,” he explained, “and I would get to pick through ’em and I tried to pick the ones that would challenge me rhythm wise. I tried to experiment with a bunch of different flows, “ he admitted. “I try to do that every album, but this album I actually got an opportunity to sit down, and go all out with, and try to make every flow different and just pick unique beats.”

Aside from Relapse, whose cover art recently spilled onto the Net, Em’s longtime manager and business partner Paul Rosenberg told listeners that the rapper will be making a cameo in a movie this summer. Without giving any further information Rosenberg said, “It’s kind of like a big deal.” Em added that he’s open to returning to the film world, “We’re definitely open to scripts and I’m definitely looking to get back into it soon,” he said enthusiastically.

Em graces the cover of the new XXL magazine as Marvel comic book character The Punisher, which hits stands on May 5. Relapse is set to come to shelves on May 19, with the sequel to the disc to be released sometime later this year.

“HAND IN MY POCKET” - 360 RECORD DEALS LOOK TO BECOME THE NORM

Ask any respectable artist (read: one with a likely career in the industry) about a 360 record deal and they’ll tell you that it’s nothing short of a pact with the devil. For decades, labels have charged copious amounts of dollars for recording, manufacturing and distributing albums, but the show money was always their bread and butter. But according to Edgar Bronfman, CEO of Warner Music Group, the option to have the label in your pocket every turn of the way is no longer an option — it’s become mandatory.

Bronfman argued to a hostile crowd that it doesn’t make sense for labels to pour money into artist development when CD sales, their primary source of revenue, continue to decline (although he did say that digital sales now make up 20% of their revenue). Without other ways to make money from an artist, he said, they wouldn’t continue to promote artists.

What all this boils down to is record labels becoming increasingly disconsolate that they’re living in a world where artists are growing less dependent on them. Does a Drake or U-N-I need a record label to give away free music at one of their shows or online?

Let’s be real here.

Artists are accomplishing more and more without the security blanket of a major corporation so who’s going to feel pressured to split every slice of the pie with a company that can’t even promote their product to the fullest extent of their dollar?

I'm already ahead of the pack...what I'm doing will give me the biggest 360 Deal in history....Mark my words

Bun B Says Book Helped Him Cope With Loss

When faced with the death of a family member or friend, people tend to react and cope in different ways. Some people prefer to cope alone, while others might turn to the words of others.

When rapper Bun B was left to deal with the death of his friend and music partner, Pimp C, he found console in a book he purchased for his mother. Titled The Year Of Magical Thinking, the book Bun B purchased for his mother is an exploration of writer Joan Didion’s marriage, life, and the untimely death of her husband.

"Losing your best friend is like losing a part of yourself,” Bun B explained to King magazine. "I bought Joan Didion's book about losing her husband for my mom. I read some of the excerpts, and one was (Didion) talking about how not a day goes by where there isn't something she wants to talk about with her husband. I kind of understand that - not to say that Pimp C was my husband, by any means.”

In December 2007, Pimp C was found dead in his hotel room from a combination of accidental overdose and sleep apnea.

“…I see cars that I knew he would have loved to drive. I hear songs that he (would've loved) to rap on,” Bun told King. “I hear beats he would have loved to comment on. Even seen women he would've loved to have been with at one time or another in his life. It's just little things that I would love to talk to him about."

Rick Ross Challenges Eminem, Says He Defeated 50 Cent

Rick Ross has lyrically challenged Eminem to a rap battle, a brazen move for the Miami-based artist.

Ross feels that he has defeated 50 Cent, a close Eminem affiliate, and now says he’s ready for the Shady Records founder.

"I think he's a bigger and better artist than what Curly is," Ross told MTV News. "So if I was looking to fulfill that excitement or that rush, that's who I have to address."

Rick Ross even left his options open when Eminem, stating if they didn’t battled, he’d like to be involved with the Detroit rapper’s new album, Relapse.

"I'm trying to be a part of that (Relapse)," Ross said. "It's either way. We gonna see each other one way or another."

Last week, Ross declared himself the winner in his battled with rapper 50 Cent, who has hurled a multitude of personal insults at him.

“When this feud started, if he was as weak as I thought he was, he would rely mainly on all other resources except [for] his talent and his ability,” Ross told AllHiphop.com, “because he knows he can’t compete with me in that area. And that’s how I finished him.”

Ross’ victorious assertion may be premature to some, because 50 Cent has stated publicly that he has another round of personal attacks looming.

Ultimately, Ross said he’s pleased with his music on Deeper Than Rap, his new album.

“I just like to build and expand on the music. I’m relentless with the hustle,” Ross said. “I feel like the music is better than ever.”

Neither Eminem nor 50 Cent have responded to Ross’ recent claims or challenges.

Talib Kweli Reveals Possible Rock The Bells Special Guest

Talib Kweli will perform alongside Hi-Tek as a reunited Reflection Eternal at this year’s Rock The Bells festival, but the Brooklyn emcee caught up with XXLmag.com to reveal the possibility of another duo appearing on stage, as well.

“There’s a possibility that Mos might be coming out on that, too,” said Kweli, intimating that Pretty Flaco could hit the stage for a few dates of the summer festival. Yet even before the tour kicks off, Black Star will reunite for a pair of shows at the Nokia Theater in Times Square on May 30.

“All of my records have outsold Black Star—my Hi-Tek record, my solo records—but the question I get more than anything is ‘When’s the new Black Star coming?’” said Kweli of the fans clamor for collaboration between him and Mos Def. “It proves to me that record sales have nothing to do with what’s in people’s hearts.”

Though there’s no news of a Black Star album in the works, Kweli has confirmed that he has at least one effort on the way. Revolutions Permitted, the follow-up to Reflection Eternal’s first album, Train of Thought, is “almost done” and due out this summer.

Kid Cudi Welcomed To Universal, Gets Label Of His Own

Kid Cudi, the rapper behind the hit song “Day N Nite” has finally found a label to call home. On April 15, it was announced that the Ohio-born rapper will be joining Universal Motown.

“Kid Cudi is at the vanguard of a game-changing new generation of artists,” Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone explained in a statement. “He crosses musical boundaries with an appeal that goes beyond genre, format, race, language, and culture. Cudi lives easily in the Hip Hop, Indie Rock, Pop, and R&B worlds – a diversity that shows in his innovative music and his all-embracing persona. He is a born storyteller who brings a positive, life-affirming message to his brilliant lyrical flow and compelling music. There are no clichés in what Cudi does. He is a breath of fresh air – a dynamic and important new voice, not only in the next phase of Hip Hop, but as a groundbreaking trendsetter who represents the future. I am thrilled to welcome Kid Cudi into the Universal Motown family.”

Without the assistance of any major label, Kid Cudi has managed to begin a successful career. His song “Day N Nite” has managed to stay on the Billboard charts for an impressive 96 weeks, peaking at the number seven spot on the Pop 100 chart. The song is also a Top 5 download on iTunes.

Currently, Kid Cudi is working on wrapping up his debut album Man on the Moon: The Guardian. The album is expected to be released later summer 2009.

Aside from wrapping up his debut album, Kid Cudi also has plans on starting his own label entitled Dream On with friends Emile and Plain Pat.

“Partnering Kid Cudi with Universal Motown and Sylvia Rhone couldn't be a more natural fit,” Emile and Plain Pat explained in a statement. “They were the first major company to take notice of our movement and truly grasp our vision. We are thrilled to extend and deepen our relationship. It's a great feeling to watch the world discover the talent we saw in Cudi over these past years.”

Dream On is expected to launch later this year as a venture with G.O.O.D. Music.

The Hot Boys Get Closer To Reunion Album

Six years after The Hot Boys released Let ‘Em Burn, their last project before they officially split, Juvenile, Lil Wayne, B.G., Turk, and producer Mannie Fresh are in talks for a reunion, according to Vibe.

“I already signed the deal,” Juvenile told Vibe late last month, “so for me I’m gonna definitely say it’s a go. I already received the check.”

The New Orleans group officially split back in 2003 amidst rumors of financial mismanagement and infighting, although group members Juvenile, B.G., and Turk left Cash Money Records earlier in 2002. Despite previous issues however, members believe that now is a good time to get back together.

“At one point in time, you couldn’t get me to talk about [the reunion],” Turk said last month. “I wasn’t open for it. But as I got older, I started understanding life in general. Things happen for a reason. People go through things, family go through things. You know they sit down talk it over, be real about it, acknowledge their mistakes, and just move on.”

And while a few members are optimistic about the future of The Hot Boys, others involved with the group are questioning if the reunion will be worth it.

“My thing is, I’m bent on it being a classic,” said Mannie Fresh, Cash Money’s former staple producer. “Like, what can I do to make this great? The Hot Boys got a sound [and] without that sound, what is it worth? I still think these dudes are great rappers and I still think they on their game, but it gotta be something like… I ain’t saying that we gotta take our time because that ain’t never been us, but it’s gotta be right.”

B.G., whose upcoming album, Too Hood To Be Hollywood is slated for release later this year said, “We finishing all the paper work now, and hopefully we will have that out this year. It’s going to be bigger than The Beatles!”

A Hot Boys reunion may prove to be a bit difficult as members are all signed to different record labels. Lil Wayne remains on Cash Money/Universal, Juvenile and B.G. are signed to Atlantic, Mannie Fresh is independent, and Turk is awaiting parole after pleading guilty to shooting a Tennessee SWAT Team deputy back in ’04. However, all group members are currently optimistic.

“…For me and Wayne, it’s a go,” shared Juve. “I don’t know if the business been straightened out, but I know B.G.’s on board and he’s willing to do it. I don’t know where Turk stand on the business side.”

There’s no word yet on exactly when the group pans to reunite.

Once he gets past killing Skynet robots alongside Christian Bale in this summer’s Terminator Salvation, Common is slated to star in another high-profile film. Variety reports that the Chicago emcee has signed on to play a villain in the comedy, Date Night.

The all-star cast of the 20th Century Fox production includes stars Steve Carrell of The Office and Tina Fey of 30 Rock, as well as Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, and Taraji P. Henson in supporting roles. Yet to begin filming, Date Night has no official release date at press time.

For Common, in addition to conquering the big screen, his next moves will take him into the fragrance and apparel worlds.
