Big Tigger Plans HIV/AIDS Awareness Event

Former BET host Big Tigger will be hosting an HIV/AIDS awareness event next weekend. Scheduled for June 5-6 in Washington, DC, the two days will include a town hall meeting, an HIV testing initiative, and a silent auction and celebrity basketball game to raise donations for the cause.
Tigger recently revealed a sizable list of artists who will be playing in the celebrity game, including Nelly Trey Songz, Twista, and Mims as well as sports stars such as Vince Carter and Clinton Portis.

A strong advocate for the awareness of the life-threatening illness, Tigger stated, “More people are living with HIV and AIDS today than ever before. It saddens me to know that, in the United States, the most powerful country in the world, the HIV infection rates are as bad if not worse than in third world countries.” Continuing, he said “We need to educate everyone about the HIV virus and get as many people tested as we can because most HIV infections are transmitted by people who don’t know their status.”

Acknowledging the fact that attendees will largely come to have fun, Tigger lent some advice for his 8th Annual Celebrity Classic. “Do yourself a favor; come out and have a good time. Learn some stuff, get tested, know your status.”

Diddy Gets Hate from Twitterers

Diddy is one of the most popular celebrities on Twitter. So, it is somewhat surprising that one of the top 10 Twitter trends has become to unfollow Diddy. The Twitter trend has taken off and many people have posted various reasons to unfollow the head of Bad Boy.

This has caused Diddy to lock his tweets so that only fans can read his messages. On top of this, he started his own trend, one that made it to Twitter's top 10 trends on Friday May 29, called Give a Hater a Hug.

He’s also responded to the trend by having inspirational messages against hate.

“Life is short! Use your time wisely! While you’re trying to tear me down I’m already onto my next dream!”

No word on if this actually hurt Diddy, but he still has over a million followers and the numbers seem to be growing. Diddy has also recently received top honors at the FiFi(R) Awards hosted by The Fragrance Foundation.

“To receive our second award for Fragrance of the Year in the Men’s Luxe category for our newest men’s fragrance, ‘I Am King’, is truly a dream come true for me,” Diddy stated. “‘I Am King’ represents my belief that whatever you believe about yourself is what you are destined to become. I believe that every man has the right to be a king, and I developed this fragrance to honor the king in every man.”
Diddy won the same award for Unforgivable

Common Is Happy That Bling Is Dead

Since the start of the new year, reports have been coming in about the decline in sales of bling. Some have added that the recession was to blame. Whatever the reason, Common recently reacted to the news and spoke on his style with The Los Angeles Times.

"I think it's great that [bling] is gone," he told the Los Angeles paper. "That really didn't exemplify style. It was just like, 'I have the money to buy this.' And that ain't what style's about. ... I think good style is about having an eye for quality things and putting them together so they have a feel and integrity and flavor."

As some fans have suggested, Com admits that being under the Hollywood lights as an actor has made him change his style.

"I think I do focus on it more. When I was rapping, my mother used to say, 'You need to lift your hat up so people can see your face.' And I was like 'Look, don't nobody care about that -- they just want some good music, some music that's knockin'. But in films . . . it's more important. So I want to look good, I want to feel good. But most importantly, as an actor, I want to be good."

Fans may recall that Common also worked on a line of caps. The line, Soji, is being reworked at present time and may be out with new work from Com in 2010. His interest in fashion has also landed him a gig as the man behind the new ads for the Diesel fragrance Only The Brave. Plus, he will be in charge of designing new shirts for Microsoft.

"They contacted me and said they wanted me to design some T-shirts that revolve around hip-hop and 1985, which is when Microsoft Windows was introduced. It was kinda fun."

Fans can preview the shirts, including one around "I Used to Love H.E.R.," online.

According to Mr. Sense, people can expect to see more of him in the world of fashion soon.

"We were thinking of doing a 'waist-up' line -- belts and shirts and accessories. And since working with Diesel, I'm interested in [fragrance] too."

End of The Weak: Pharoahe Monch - Is A Nas Collab In The Works?

I caught up with Pharoahe Monch at the press day for the BK Hip-Hop festival for EOW, and he talked about being a part of this incredible event (that keeps getting better EVERY year, btw). He also talked about his touring experiences and bringing hip-hop overseas, as well as Eminem and Nas as influences in his writing process. He also reveals the possibility of doing a song with Nas. That would be fucking bonkers.

Jay-Z and Eminem Join Forces in Video Game Business

The upcoming DJ Hero video game just landed two heavy hitters as MCs: Jay-Z and Eminem.

Both rappers are bringing their music to the newest offshoot of Activision's successful $2 billion Guitar Hero franchise. The game, played with a turntable-shaped controller, is due out this fall for PlayStation 3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii (no price or rating yet).

A limited edition comes with the rappers' exclusive new greatest-hits CDs, possibly including previously unreleased tracks, plus an advanced version of the controller, a DJ stand and metal traveling case. Jay-Z and Eminem will serve as consultants to Activision and the game's developer, FreeStyleGames.

The complete list of tracks the rappers are providing is still being worked out. Jay-Z plans on including Izzo (H.O.V.A.) and Dirt Off Your Shoulder for sure. Also possible: tracks from his in-the-works Blueprint 3 album. "I have a ton of content, I just need the pipeline," he says. "I love the freedom of (DJ Hero). I could wake up tomorrow morning with the idea for a song and call the guys at Activision and start working on getting it out."

Eminem is more cryptic about his contributions. "I don't want to give away any surprises yet," he says in an e-mail interview. "DJ Hero will include my music, and I'll be providing additional material as downloadable content by the end of the year."

"You are going to get over 100 songs from 80 artists and 80 brand-new mixes that have never been heard before, including one with Eminem and Jay-Z (together)," says Guitar Hero president and CEO Dan Rosensweig.

I think I'll be able to get a freebie. I mean, you would think.

Dr. Dre’s Dr. Pepper Commercial, DETOX Plays In Background

It may just be a few seconds of music, but Dr. Dre fans will remember the new Dr. Pepper ad as the spot where they heard the first officially released beats from the much-delayed “Detox.”

The L.A.-based hip-hop producer appears in the last installment of an ad campaign entitled “Trust Me, I’m A Doctor,” and teases music from the long-awaited album, currently slated for a late 2009 release on Aftermath/Interscope. The commercial will begin airing on Monday, June 1.

Ginuwine & Bun B - "Trouble & Touch" BTS (Three/21 Media)

Yesterday the Three/21 crew were in Brooklyn shooting two videos for Ginuwine, “Touch Me” and “Trouble” featuring the legendary Bun B. These tracks are featured on Ginuwine’s 6th album “A Man’s Thoughts” which reunites him with Timbaland and also goes to show how prolific the man is in the Hip Hop/R&B game. Shoutout to Denise Williams at Warner Brothers, Joey IE over at Asylum and Ginuwine for being one of the nicest dudes we’ve ever worked with. Enjoy!

Focus Is No Longe Focused On Aftermath

Focus has worked with J.Lo, Beyonce, The Game and others. Now, the former Aftermath producer is ready to take everything he learned from Dr. Dre to his own label, a.Fam Entertainment.

While he worked with Dre, he says he never tried to become a biter.

"Dre said he liked my style, the way I attacked the music." Focus said via statement.; "He heard East and west coast in my sound and he liked the way that I bridged the two. He said I was talented, so he never made me become a mini [Dr. Dre]. He always took me for who I was and let me be me."

Recently, he has linked up with Busta Rhymes to produce his hit "Respect My Conglomerate." Aside from this, he has also started working with Christina Aguilera, Bishop Lamont and Chino XL.

As he tries to head a label, he says he won't lose touch with production.

"This year I'm really showing people what I'm capable of. Ultimately, I don't want to be anything but a great producer."

Recession To Blame For Fake Jewelry?

With the economic recession affecting the daily lives of people all over the globe, it is no surprise that the negative effects are also hitting the world of Hip Hop. But the failing economy is doing more than just leaving a dent in Hip Hop album sales. According to the Wall Street Journal, a lack of financial resources is also making it difficult for rap artists to afford the obligatory diamond-studded accessories and heavy, laced out gold chains.
“A lot of these rappers simply don't have the money for real stuff anymore,” said Jason Arasheben, Beverly Hills-based jeweler whose clientele includes Hollywood celebs and Saudi royalty. “It's to the point where they are wearing imitation jewelry, and that's ridiculous.”
Music producer and co-founder of Cash Money Records, Bryan “Birdman” Williams agreed with the assessment that artists are finding it hard to keep up their collection of jewelry. “Times are hard, ain't nobody rocking it like that anymore,” he said. His brother, and other co-founder of the label, Ronald “Slim” Williams, agreed. “People think these big pieces are blinding but they be like D-quality diamonds and when you try and sell them you learn they ain’t worth a thing.”

Merely two years ago, Hip Hop jewels were not so difficult to come by as they are in 2009. Artist Lil Jon managed to make the 2007 Guinness Book of World Records for owning the largest diamond pendant on Earth (encrusted with 3,756 round-cut white diamonds, the necklace spelled out “Crunk Ain’t Dead” and weighed more than five pounds).
But the days in which Rap artists could spend money frivolously on ice seem to be long gone. "TV Johnny" Dang, a Houston jeweler who sells grillz and is a business partner to Paul Wall [click to read], said that the failing economic climate has forced him to adapt by selling customers the cheaper jewelry they want and can afford. Consumers have ditched the 18-and 14-karat gold and have settled for 12k, which is only 50% gold (for half the price).
“The look is still big,” said Dang, “but people are going with smaller karat diamonds and lower-karat gold.”
Many rappers have not been too enthusiastic about admitting to the influence that the economy has had on their buying power. However, this is not surprising in a culture where the shiniest bling classifies one as elite.
More recently, rapper 50 Cent took shots at adversary Rick Ross for wearing what he claimed were fake and rented jewelry. "Everything that you see has to be absolutely fake," 50 said in a radio interview.
Rap artists may see their images threatened as the struggling economy affects their ability to purchase "authentic" jewelry.
"You gotta understand, it is every rapper's fear to be exposed as a fraud," said Gregory Lewis, who interviews artists for his personal website. "If you admit you wear fake jewelry, it is over for you. It's like bragging you drive a Lamborghini when you really drive a Toyota."

Eminem Reclaims The Throne, Sells Over 600K In First Week On The Charts

HitsDailyDouble.com have hit the mark once again. As projected last week, Eminem has landed on top of the Billboard 200 sales chart today (May 27), breaking the record for the highest selling album of ’09 and going gold after only one week in stores according to Nielsen’s SoundScan.

The reclusive Detroit lyricist officially sold over 608,200 copies of his dark comeback disc Relapse, his first solo studio since 2004’s Encore. The disc, which was produced almost entirely by Dr. Dre, minus one track (“Beautiful”), is Em’s 6th album to grab the no. 1 spot – including his greatest hits compilation Curtain Call and the soundtrack to his biopic 8 Mile.

Shady wasn’t the only rap superstar to debut on the charts this week. New releases by Method Man and Redman and Busta Rhymes also made their way onto the top 10. Red and Meth landed at the no. 4 position with their sequel to 1999’s platinum-selling LP Blackout. The disc managed to sell 63,200 copies in its first seven days on the shelves. Bussa Bus fared two spots down at no. 6 with his 8th album, Back On My B.S. which pushed 59,100 units.

At no. 22 is Rick Ross with his third album, Deeper Than Rap. Fans brought home 19,800 more copies of the CD this week, bringing the Miami boss’ total sales numbers to 290,290 after five weeks.

Four spots down at no. 26 is the mixtape king DJ Drama with his second major label compilation Gangsta Grillz: The Album Vol. 2. The star-studded disc, which features cameos from T.I., Nas, Ludacris, Rick Ross, Akon, Fabolous, Gucci Mane and The-Dream, among others, sold 17,700 copies in its first week.

Rounding out the top 40 is Dipset founder Cam’ron at no. 35, falling 32 slots since last week’s debut on the charts. Killa sold 15, 300 Crime Pays CDs this go-around, bringing his grand total to 58,400.

Next week look for Eminem to get comfortable at the throne.

Drake Performs For A Star-Studded Crowd In NYC, Kanye West & Lyor Cohen Among Attendees

Add New York City to the growing list of major cities Drake has shut down. The Toronto MC rocked a sold out crowd at famed Manhattan club S.O.B.s last night, as part of Hot 97’s “Who’s Next” concert series.

Drizzy treated concertgoers to standout cuts off his critically-acclaimed So Far Gone mixtape, including “Successful,” “November 18th,” “Sooner Than Later,” “Best I Ever Had,” “Say What’s Real” and “Uptown” for which he brought out Bun B.

Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Ryan Leslie, DJ Green Lantern, The Alchemist, MC Lyte, BET’s Stephen Hill, Warner Music Group CEO Lyor Cohen and Warner Music Group COO Julie Greenwald, were all in attendance for the performance.

With his short solo run over, Drake is currently in talks for a megatour later this summer. “God willing, if everything goes according to plan and everybody’s schedule is in place, then I will be on tour with some amazing people,” Drake told Musch Music earlier this month. “One of them being Jay-Z, one of them being Lil Wayne, one of them being Young Jeezy and one of them being me.”

Kanye Says Autotune Songs Are Not On BP3 Anymore; Album Is Now Anti-Autotune & Talks About His Book

“He’s just been working on it, and it’s gonna be amazing when he drops it. I think it’s good he’s taking his time to give people the best product possible and not being rushed by this fast-food, media-outlet, Internet, everything-is-getting-leaked, people-stealing your-songs-before-you-can-mix-them-and-put-them-online world we’re living in right now.”

Kanye revealed that he and Jay went back in and made some alterations to B3 since they first started.

“We actually removed all the songs with Auto-Tune off of his album,” West said, “to make the point that this is an anti-Auto-Tune album, even though I released an album that has all Auto-Tune!

“It doesn’t matter to me,” Kanye laughed about Jay not wanting to incorporate the sound that is featured so heavily on Kanye’s 808s & Heartbreak. “It’s music; it’s just sonics. I like Auto-Tune so I do it, but you want the other thing — like you’ll wear a suit to a wedding and gym shoes to a basketball game. I think it’s a perfect moment for Jay to provide some gym shoes to a basketball game right now.”

Mike Tyson Daughter Passes Away

The 4-year-old daughter of boxer Mike Tyson died at a hospital Tuesday, a day after her neck apparently got caught in a treadmill cord at her Phoenix home.

Exodus Tyson was pronounced dead just before noon, police spokesman Andy Hill said. She had been on life support since the accident Monday.

“There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus,” the Tyson family said in a statement. “We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

Police said Exodus either slipped or put her head in the loop of a cord hanging under the console. Her 7-year-old brother found her and told their mother. She took Exodus off the cord, called the emergency dispatcher and tried to revive her.

Responding officers and firefighters performed cardiopulminory resuscitation as they took the girl to the hospital.

Former heavyweight champion Tyson was in Las Vegas at the time of the accident and flew Monday to Phoenix, where he was seen entering the hospital.

Tyson spokeswoman Cynthia Schwartz said the family had not arranged a funeral yet.

I really sorry to hear this...Best wishes to the Tyson family in these difficult times

Drake Apologizes To Fans About Missed L.A. Performance

Failing to perform at a Los Angeles club this past weekend, Young Money rapper Drake gave a heartfelt explanation about his no show on his own personal blog, octobersveryown.blogspot.com, Kanye West style.

According to Drizzy, posters for the event at Element nightclub promoted local rapper Japan as a opening act and the Toronto MC as the “main show” on Saturday (May 23), but he had no intentions of delivering a set onstage after performing earlier in the evening at Cal State L.A. alongside the likes of Ryan Leslie and U-N-I.

“I was being paid to host a party and when I showed up, the money I was promised for that simple task was short,” he wrote. “The promoters were asking me to ‘just do one or two songs’ and leave but I am an artist and I take pride in the show I’ve put together. I refuse to step onstage and allow people to believe that I am okay with them paying $40 dollars to see me rap over two records that my DJ plays.”

“I apologize to anybody in L.A. that was deceived and I promise that when I return I will drain my body of all its energy when I hit that fuckin’ stage and give you all the best performance I can,” Drake continued.

The rapper/actor hits the stage again tonight (May 26) in downtown New York City for a sold out Hot 97 showcase at S.O.B.’s. The heavily-buzzed artist, who is still currently unsigned, is reportedlty in talks for a full on tour with hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Z, Young Jeezy and Young Money head Lil Wayne.

Really??? Is that how it went down Drake??? I think I need to be a little more careful w/ who I decide to work with out here

Wale’s Manager Explains Rapper’s Affiliation With Roc Nation

Washington, D.C. rapper Wale announced his affiliation with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label in a live performance video clip that recently surfaced on the net- leaving many fans confused as to the XXL freshman’s allegiance. XXLMag.com spoke to Wale’s manager, Daniel Weisman, to explain the deal.

According to Weisman, Wale is still signed to Mark Ronson’s imprint Allido on Interscope Records but now, along with his company Elitaste,Inc., he will also be co-managed by Roc Nation.

“[It] just sort of happened organically,” Weisman said of the new partnership. “Wale went on tour with Jay-Z last summer and got to know the Roc Nation people – [he] went on tour with Mark Ronson, who was opening for Jay-Z in the U.K. Got to know [Jay] and it just seemed like a good move for him to do that.”

Jay has several names attached to his Roc Nation imprint, a reported $150 million deal he brokered with Live Nation last year. He has signed up-and-coming North Carolina MC J. Cole, and is in talks with former Roc-A-Fella rapper Young Chris. HitsDailyDouble.com reports that Roc Nation has already signed up a sizable roster of emerging producers and songwriters as well.

As for Wale, Weisman says that his debut is done and is expected to hit stores this summer. The album will also feature cameos from Lady Gaga - who is on his lead single “Chillin” - Bun B, Marsha Ambrosius, K’Naan and Melanie Fiona. It will include production by Mark Ronson, Cool & Dre, and DJ Green Lantern, among others.

Jay-Z In Talks To Bring Roc Nation To Sony?

With news that Jay-Z has reportedly bought out his contract with Def Jam for $5 million, rumors are circulating that the Brooklyn MC is in talks to bring his Roc Nation imprint to Sony.

HitsDailyDouble.com reports that Jay has several connections to the company. Epic president Amanda Ghost is managed by Roc Nation and Hov’s business partner Jay Brown, and recently Brown has been seen around town on several occasions with Columbia/Epic Label Group Chairman Rob Stringer. Inside sources reportedly involved in the deal say that the partnership should be finalized soon, with Roc Nation releasing material on both Columbia and Epic.

As XXLMag.com reported earlier today (May 26) Jay has several names attached to his Roc Nation imprint, a reported $150 million deal he brokered with Live Nation last year. He has signed up-and-coming North Carolina MC J. Cole, and is in talks with former Roc-A-Fella rapper Young Chris. Roc Nation has already signed up a sizable roster of emerging producers and songwriters and co-manages Washington, D.C. XXL freshman Wale.

Nas Wants Judge To Deny Kelis Spousal Support In Divorce

It doesn’t look like Nas and Kelis are on good terms. After filing for divorce last month against her husband of three years, Kelis - who cannot work because she is pregnant with the Queens rapper’s son - is asking for Nas to pay for her lawyer fees in the case.

TMZ reports today (May 20) that not only does Nas not want to pay for his ex’s attorney, but he doesn’t want to fork over any money for spousal support.

Both Esco and the R&B singer are seeking custody of the child that Kelis is just weeks away from birthing. Rumor is that Kelis filed for the split because she believes Nas was cheating on her.

As of press time neither artist has offered any statements about the case.

She thought he was gonna stay faithful???

Jay Confirms Independece

With rumors swirling around Jay’s Def Jam contract buyout, Hov exclusively spoke to Rap Radar to confirm the speculation.

“I can honestly say, working with Doug Morris and LA Reid has been a unique and fulfilling experience and I respect them immensely. I’ve been in the family for almost my entire career.

Doug and I spoke directly and had one of the most unique “negotiations” ever. Doug won the toss but, we both won in the end..

I thank him for allowing me to be a completely independent artist. Not every artist can say they own or are given the opportunity to own all of their music.”

Label Rep Says Lil Wayne Album Pushed Back Again To July

One month after it was reported that Lil Wayne’s new album Rebirth was pushed back to June, XXLMag.com has learned that the project has been moved once again.

Reports came out today that the disc was moved, and a label rep has confirmed that the experimental album will now come out sometime in July. It is unclear if the several tracks that have leaked on the net will be included on the CD, like “Politics” with Gudda Gudda or “Spit In Your Face” with Cash Money artist Kevin Rudolf.

Yet according to Rolling Stone, the leaked song “Fix My Hat” will be on Rebirth.

In April it was reported that Universal wants to the release Weezy’s Young Money compilation on the same date as Rebirth, which is complicating the drop date. As of press time it is uncertain if that is still the case.

Slaughterhouse Sign to E1 Music, Album Coming In July

Jay-Z Buys Out Def Jam Contract?”

Word on the skreets is Jay bought the rights to that last album he owes Def Jam for 5 mil.

According to HitsDailyDouble’s Rumor Mill:

ONE NATION UNDER JAY-Z: As Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s new home under the Live Nation umbrella, takes shape, the hip-hop superstar has reportedly bought back the last remaining record on his IDJ deal for what some say is a whopping $5 million, raising a number of intriguing questions. How does the album figure into the plans of Roc Nation’s brain trust, which also includes the A&R-savvy Jay Brown and Tata, as well as Jay-Z’s business manager John Menielly? How will it be marketed and distributed? Will Roc Nation employ a traditional distribution channel or take the LP direct to retail? Or alternatively, will the new company make it part of a rumored arrangement inside a major? Every one of the Big Four is reportedly eager to make such a deal. (5/20p)

They also had this little tidbit about the possible direction of Roc Nation, Hovie’s new label venture with Live Nation:

RE-BIRTH OF A NATION: Roc Nation handles a sizable roster of emerging producers and songwriters, who can be plugged into recording projects in various combinations on a full-service basis. According to those in the know, Jay Brown, Roc Nation’s creative mastermind, envisions the company as ultimately bypassing outside entities altogether and doing everything in-house—signing acts, making records and distributing them in whatever way they see fit—a setup modeled on Berry Gordy’s original Motown. (5/20p)

I know what you’re thinking: 5 million is too much. Will Blueprint 3 even earn that much? Well, maybe not in retail sales, but I’m sure he’ll recoup on whatever tour he’s got up his sleeve. And if all else fails, I understand he has a money tree in his back yard.

Why Didn’t Method Man & Redman Want to Play w/ The Roots

Eminem x Royce da 5′9″ in 1998

Wow, this is truly a fucking treat. In 1998, a young Eminem spoke to Quest of UGHH on the Lyricist Louge Tour. He was a bit more ready to speak on his project and sorta dressed like a pedophile, but it is a gem to see how he would conduct himself before his career skyrockted with the success of The Slim Shady LP. The end of the video includes footage from a year later when Quest runs into Eminem while interviewing Royce da 5′9″, who was on tour with Shady, to speak on Bad Meets Evil, and Em is a completely new person.

Just hearing Quest speak on the internet is unbelieveable in itself, watching Royce, Em & Paul is mind-boggling.

Konvict Muzik’s Dolla murdered at Los Angeles mall

Dolla, an Atlanta rapper that was signed to East St. Louis native Akon’s Konvict Muzik label, was shot and killed at an upscale shopping mall yesterday (Mon., May 18) in Los Angeles.

The Atlanta native was fatally shot in the head near a valet stand outside the Beverly Center mall. No arrests have been made, but police were questioning a man found hours later with a gun in the ticketing area of the Los Angeles International Airport, according to reports.

Apparently Dolla, 21, whose real name is Roderick Burton II, was shot after an argument with the gunman, his publicist Sue Vannasing told the Los Angeles Times.

Police said the man detained at the airport remains in custody for questioning.

The Atlanta-based Burton and another rapper, D.J. Shabbazz, were said to be waiting at the valet stand after shopping when an argument broke out with another group and Burton was shot.

Burton worked on the soundtrack for the 2006 dance film "Step Up" and recently released two singles with Akon: "Like This" and "She So Fine." His MySpace page, said he once modeled for Diddy's Sean John clothing line and was signed to Jive and Elektra record labels.

Dolla signed to Akon's Konvict Muzik label in May 2007, after creating a buzz throughout Atlanta. He made his debut with the single "Who the [expletive] Is That?", which was his biggest hit, reaching #82 on the Billboard Hot 100. His song, "Feelin' Myself", is featured on the Step Up soundtrack.

The rapper was working on his second album, "A Dolla and a Dream," which was due to be released on Akon's Konvict Muzik label.

Rest In Peace Dolla...Niggaz be taking shit way too far...God Bless his family, friends & loved ones

Industry Insider Reveals "Secret War" Between LL Cool J and Jay-Z

Former entertainment lawyer turned author and part-time blogger, Reggie Ossé, shared in his blog today stories of a long ago “secret war” between LL Cool J and Jay-Z. The blog, called Combat Jack With Today’s Mathematics, recounts Damon Dash and DJ Clark Kent’s efforts to provoke a Rap battle between the then '90s king, LL, and the relatively unknown rookie rapper, Jay-Z.

“[Dame and Clark] figured if Jay was known as the dude that kilt LL in battle, record labels would take note and give him that much sought after deal,” wrote Ossé. “Dame and Clark had the plan laid out, whenever LL was spotted by either of them, they would page each other and Jay and get him to meet at whatever location LL was. This went on a couple of times. Once contacted, Jay would roll up to the club, bar or whatever venue and lay in the cut, waiting for his opportunity to attack LL in battle. Dame would polly with, then taunt LL about how Jay was nicer than him, was ready to take his spot even. LL's ego would result in him agreeing to go head to head against the young and then unknown challenger.”

At the time (circa 1992) LL had found success with his Grammy-winning album Mama Said Knock You Out, and was known as the king of battle Rap. However, as Ossé tells it, LL had lost those secret battles with Jay-Z.

“Dame and Clark would end up in my office the following day, laughing about how Jay lit that ass up. Every time too. They was a bit sour too, cause after each battle, LL would kill the vibe, crush Jay's high by flinging the ‘Yo, my next record is dropping next month, uhm, when's yours coming out again, scrap?’ line at him. Jay, Dame and Clark didn't like that shit. Not one bit. I'm betting those battles are the reason LL is still kinda aggie towards Jay.”
Between 2006 and 2008, Jay-Z's presidency at Def Jam Records resulted in a public disapproval from veteran artist LL Cool J, who felt that his career and projects were mishandled, despite deing an artist since 1985 for the label.
