McNally Smith Offers Nation's First Hip-Hop Diploma

McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, Minnesota is introducing a new Hip-Hop Studies Diploma program, which will start with the September, 2009 semester.

The program, which spans three semesters and can be completed in one calendar year, will be the nation's fist accredited, college-level diploma.

The courses will be taught by "leading hip-hop practitioners, including rapper/activist Toki Wright, who is coordinator of the new degree program, as well as an instructor.

Students will also be instructed by "other music industry veterans from McNally Smith’s faculty," McNally Smith told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

The year-long curriculum includes courses in music, music theory, music history, recording technology, music business, rhythm studies, creative writing, engineering, DJing and more.

"Hip-Hop has a monumental global impact on television, cinema, alternative media and more," the statement said. "McNally Smith's Hip-Hop Studies Diploma, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, will equip students with the skills and knowledge that are crucial in pursuing a career in Hip-Hop."

Other faculty members teaching the course include Doomtree crew member Dessa, Sean McPherson (bassist and leader of the band Heiruspecs), Joe Mabbott (an engineer and producer for numerous projects, including multiple Atmosphere releases) and others.

McNally Smith College of Music was founded in 1985, with the aim of developing music industry professionals.

The college is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music and offers music degrees and programs in Music Performance, Recording Technology and Music Business.

This Is A Good Look....I went to the Musician Institute & took the Music Business Program there and it was very helpful. There should be more programs like this since everybody in their mom is trying to break in the music biz
